Six wins on the bounce for Droitwich Spa

Droitwich Editorial 19th Jul, 2018   0

DROITWICH’S winning streak continued in Worcestershire County League Division Two as they recorded their sixth consecutive victory at Old Vigornians.

Batting first, the visitors were soon on top as Martyn Davies and Max Young put on 77 for the first wicket in just 12 overs.

Davies was first to go, unluckily run out backing up for a belligerent 53 and Young soon followed for 42, including four sweetly struck sixes.

Spa continued to bat freely though as Stuart Bryan and Jez Hanson put on 120 for the third wicket.

Bryan eventually fell for 73, but the impressive Hanson remained unbeaten on 81, an innings punctuated with sumptuous front foot drives as Spa amassed 303-8.

If OVs had any hope of victory they needed a start as positive as their opponents had been but it failed to materialise against the accuracy of Spa’s opening bowlers Phil Thomas (1-26) and Young (2-26).

In a straight win or lose game, only 50 came from the first 20 overs and despite a late flurry from Azmat Riaz (41) and Charlie Lamb (33), the old boys were eventually bowled out for 207 in the 43rd over to go down to a 96-run defeat.

Ian Cottrill’s side are now in fifth place and just 30 points behind leaders Oldswinford who they meet at St Peters Fields on Saturday.

The Seconds enjoyed a similarly comfortable result as they thrashed nine-man Cookley by ten wickets in Division One Second XI.

After restricting their opponents to 136, openers Dave Huntbatch (79 not out) and Kieran Wilkins (57 not out) smashed the runs required in just 10.4 overs.

Captain Karl Goddard earlier returning 2-6 from his ten overs.

There was a superb display by Ashley Walton with both bat and ball as the Thirds also tasted victory with a 99-run win at Cookhill in Division Five.

He scored 103 and Mark Smith weighed in with a half century in Spa’s 277-7.

Walton then recorded 2-25 from his nine overs and helped to contain the Cookhill reply with the assistance of fellow spinner Archie Fenn, who added 4-42 to his earlier 44 not out.

Old Elizabethans prevented a clean sweep of Droitwich wins as they beat the Fourths by 82 runs in Division Five Second XI, thanks to 94 from Yasein Beig and 59 from Mike Harris.

Paul Cowlard also hit 59 for the hosts who were bowled out for 204.

On Saturday the Seconds and Thirds are on their travels to Worcester and Harvington respectively, while the Fourths entertain Barnards Green.
