Victory for Droitwich Ladies at Old Hales

Droitwich Editorial 14th Nov, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

DROITWICH Spa Ladies 1sts returned to winning ways last Saturday with a hard fought 3-1 win away to Old Halesonians Ladies 1st.

Although the bad weather, which forced the Ladies 2nds match to be postponed, made life difficult for both teams, Droitwich battled through.

They also had to come from behind as Old Hales opened the scoring. This came against the run of play, but the visitors soon levelled the scores when Louise Warrilow struck.

Droitwich raised their performance in the second half and got their rewards as Hannah Trow converted a penalty corner before Warrilow scored her second.

Droitwich Spa Ladies 2nds clash against Old Halesonians Ladies 2nds was not the only match to be called off as Droitwich Spa Mens 1st’s fixture also fell victim to the weather.

There were much better conditions for Droitwich Spa Veterans when they took on Stourport Veterans last Wednesday (November 5).

But they did not make the most of it as they suffered a 6-2 defeat despite taking an early lead through Barry Williams.

His goal ended up giving the visitors further impetus as they bounced back in superb style – scoring three times to open up a 3-1 lead at half time.

Droitwich responded well in the second period as they carved out opportunities for Luke Wickes and Williams before Peter Gurr made it 3-2.

But Stourport came back once again and scored three further goals – two of which came from penalty corners – as the away side went on to run out comfortable winners.

There was also disappointment for Droitwich Spa Mens 3rds, who were hammered 8-3 by Solihull Blossomfield. The match was all but over by half time as Solihull racked up five goals. Liam Hine hit back with two goals, while Shaun Laight also found the back of the net. But the hosts proved too strong as they cancelled them out with three of their own to notch up a emphatic victory.

Droitwich Spa Fathoms had a better day at the office as they swept to a 5-1 win at Berkswell and Balsall Common.

From the first whistle, Spa attacked with pace and created numerous chances before David Purchase broke the deadlock.

Droitwich added another when good build up play involving Callum Turne and Oliver Oxley saw Tommy Ross coolly slot the ball home.

Berkswell and Balsall got one back, but Peter Gurr rounded off an impressive first half with their third to give them a 3-1 advantage at the break.

The away side continued to dominate and eventually added to their lead when Purchase scored his second before Matthew Gurr’s close range finish completed the rout.
