Young's five-for ensures winning end to Spa's season - though relegation still a threat

Droitwich Editorial 18th Sep, 2019   0

IN-FORM Droitwich Spa claimed a fifth victory in six games to finish their season in style at home to Cookley – but still await to see if they have avoided the drop.

A low-scoring affair in Worcestershire County League Division One led to Spa securing their fifth maximum-points win, after dismissing the visitors for just 84 before guiding themselves home in 21 overs.

But with the West Midlands regional play-offs still being played, Droitwich could yet face the drop, despite their great escape.

Cookley opened with a stand of 39 between openers Jamie Brighton (5) and Stuart Nicholls (18), but quickly capitulated despite number four Jat Dhadwal (26) proving himself useful at the crease.

Captain Max Young (5-14) and Martyn Davies (4-31) were menacing with their deliveries all afternoon, and duly reaped the rewards by sharing the wickets between them, while Phillip Thomas claimed the other.

For the promising position that Droitwich puts themselves in, they were made to sweat when being reduced to 30-4.

Jack McVey (2-33), Ben Nightingale (2-36) and Charlie Barton (2-15) all came to the fore with the ball in hand, but eventually had their efforts rebuffed by scores from Matthew Gurr (23) and David Huntbatch (13).

Thomas (17no) was aided by Paul Bryan (6) and hit a flurry of quickfire runs, culminating in a shot into the boundary, to secure a final-day victory.
